The best vacuums for thick carpet are the ones with manual head height adjustment, a suction control or venting system, and a brush roll strong enough to agitate deep pile without bogging down. That is the short version of a topic where most machines fail in one of three ways: the head sits too low … Read more
The best vacuums for tile floors are hard-floor machines with a bare-floor setting, a soft or bristle roller, and enough suction to pull fine dust out of grout lines rather than push it around. A corded stick or upright wins on raw suction and unlimited runtime. A canister wins on grout and control. A robot … Read more
Luxury vinyl plank is the floor everyone warns you about. The wear layer is thin, the finish shows every scuff, and the micro-bevel between planks traps grit that grinds the surface every time somebody walks barefoot across the kitchen. I have spent the last two months running corded sticks, cordless sticks, wet/dry combos and three … Read more
Pet hair does not clean itself, and it does not care what your floors are made of. If you share a home with a shedding dog, a long-haired cat, or both, the difference between a good vacuum and a great one is whether fur gets lifted out of the pile or just pushed around it. … Read more
Shark built its reputation on carpet, and after six weeks of comparing models head to head on low-pile, medium-pile and plush rugs, that reputation holds up. There is a specific kind of carpet problem that only shows up in homes with dogs and cats, and it does not respond to vacuuming. Yes, a vacuum mop combo is good for hardwood floors, provided the finish is sealed and intact. These machines are built to leave a lightly damp surface rather than standing water, which is safe on sealed oak, maple and engineered hardwood. On unsealed, oiled or waxed wood, moisture soaks into the board, raises the grain … Read more
The sales pitch for an attic fan is that it cools your house. The physics is more modest: an attic fan cools the attic, and the rooms below get a small break from it. That gap is where most disappointed buyers end up, and it is the first thing we wanted to settle when we … Read more
A basement that reads 65% relative humidity on a humid July afternoon is not a ventilation problem. It is a capacity problem, and it is the single most misunderstood purchase in the whole home. The short answer first: 20 to 30 pints per day handles a dry 500 to 1,500 square foot basement, 35 to … Read more
Dry winter air is the quiet reason so many babies wake up congested, coughing and fussier than usual, and a humidifier is the simplest non-medication fix a parent can put in the nursery. After six weeks of running eight cool mist models in a small nursery, our team narrowed the field to the eight worth … Read more
