Fraction Mash – A Fun App for Learning to Add Fractions

December 12, 2016 by admin

fraction-mash Fraction Mash is a free iPad app that provides a fun way for students to learn about fractions. The app lets students insert two pictures then divide those pictures into grids, columns, pie slices, triangles, or rows. Once their pictures have been divided students select the portions of one picture that they want to combine with the other picture. Students’ selections of image portions must equal 1 when the two images are combined. Fraction Mash lets students choose how many pieces each picture is divided into.

When students have completed their image-based fractions problems they can save them to the camera rolls on their iPads. From there they can share them with you in a variety of ways including through Google Classroom. But there is more that your students can do with the fractions mash-ups they make in Fraction Mash. Fraction Mash includes an option for students to write reports about their fraction mashes. The reports templates let students insert the images and the fraction problems they created into their reports. They can then write about the fractions problems that they created and solved. Those reports can be saved and shared with you.

Fraction Mash does offer advertise an online classroom space, but it wasn’t working when I tried it. You’ll probably do just as well to have your students share their work with you through Google Classroom or another LMS client that is installed on your students’ iPads.

Two Math Apps that Have Students Slicing Numbers

April 29, 2015 by admin

As the end of the school year approaches I find myself receiving more requests for review and skill practice apps. Yesterday’s post was all about fractions review. Today, I have a couple of apps dealing with factoring, multiplication, division, subtraction, and addition.

math slicerMath Slicer is an iPad app that presents a fun alternative to using flashcards to practice basic mathematics skills. In Math Slicer students are shown addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems that they have to answer by “slicing” the correct answer in half. The answer choices jump up on the screen and students have to slice them before they disappear. Math Slicer is available in a free version and a paid version ($0.99). The paid version offers more levels of play.

Factor Samurai is a nice little app that students can use to practice identifying prime numbers. The app is a game in which students use a Samurai sword to chop numbers that can be factored into smaller values. As numbers appear on the screen players have to choose is they should chop them or let them pass. Factor Samurai is currently priced at $2.99

2/3 of These iPad Apps for Learning About Fractions are Free

April 28, 2015 by admin

I generally don’t get too excited about skill drill apps, but some of the cute and fun ones pull me in anyway. If you’re looking for some apps for your students to use to learn and practice their fractions skills, take a look at the following three options.

chicken coopChicken Coop Fractions is a fun game in which students have to select the decimal equivalents of the fractions shown on their screens. If they choose the correct decimal equivalent, the chicken egg will safely land in the nest. If students choose the incorrect decimal equivalent, the chicken egg splats outside of the nest. The game contains seven progressively more difficult levels for students to work through. Chicken Coop Fractions is free to install but to get much use out of it you will need purchase the game pack within the app.

Pizza Fractions 1 is a simple iPad game in which students are shown a pizza with slices missing. Students have to select the fraction that represents the number of slices left on the pizza plate. Students shake their iPads to generate new problems. Pizza Fractions 1 is the first of three apps in the Pizza Fractions series.

Zap Zap Fractions is a fun and free iPad app designed to help elementary school students learn about fractions. The app contains clear narrated visual lessons about the basics of fractions. After completing the lessons students can test their skills in recognizing fractions by playing the Zap Zap games. The games present students with a series of visuals that represent a fraction. Students have to select the correct fraction to “zap” the oncoming obstacles in the game.

Design Your Own Practice Missions on Math Blast

October 13, 2014 by admin

Screen Shot 2014-10-13 at 9.29.39 AM Math Blast (not to be confused with Math Blaster) is an iPad app that elementary school students can use to practice basic mathematics skills. Students answer math problems in order to navigate their rocket ships and earn points. As students earn more points, their rockets gain power to move through the game scenes more quickly.

The Math Blast app offers two modes for students to use. Level mode presents students with progressively more difficult math problems as they move through the game. Custom mode allows students to select a skill to practice. In the custom mode students select a skill (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and a range of numbers that will appear in the practice exercises.

Endless Numbers – An iPad App for Learning to Count and Add

April 7, 2014 by admin

Screen Shot 2014-04-07 at 1.23.05 PM Endless Numbers is a fun iPad from the same developers that brought us Endless Alphabet and Endless Reader. Endless Numbers introduces children to counting and basic addition. The free version of the app begins with the number 1 and continues through number 5 (numbers up to 25 are available through an in-app purchase).

Endless Numbers shows children a number and reads the number to them. Before moving on to the next number students have to “catch” it and drag it into place. Addition is introduced after number 1 by requiring students to drag numbers into place to complete a simple addition problem. For example, when children are on the screen for number 3 they have to drag 2 and 1 into place to complete the equation to add up to 3.

The animations in Endless Numbers makes it an engaging app for young children to use to learn basic addition.
