Two Educational iPad Apps With Halloween Themes

October 5, 2016 by admin

ipoeMath vs. Zombies is an iPad game with a spooky theme. The game is has three virtual worlds each containing ten levels of basic math problems. The object of the game is to correctly solve as many math problems as possible before the zombies catch you. The math of the game is basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. If you’re comfortable having your students play math games that have a zombie theme Math vs. Zombies offers engaging practice activities. Tap to Learn, the producers of Math vs. Zombies, offers a few non-zombie math games if you’re looking for something else to try on your iPad.

iPoe is an iPad app that features a collection of four of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories. The stories include the animations and sounds. You can interact with some of the featured animations. The four stories included in iPoe are The Oval Portrait, The Tell-Tale Heart, Annabel Lee, and The Masque of the Red Death.

Screen Shot 2013-10-24 at 4.57.39 PM Halloween Heroes is a free iPad app in which students try to collect recyclable materials. The game is designed to help students identify recyclable materials and compostable materials. In the game students go through haunted houses and walk streets to find discarded pumpkins and other Halloween leftovers. Students earn coins for collecting recyclable materials. As a reward for collecting recyclable materials students get to create Halloween costumes from recycled cardboard and other collected materials.

Halloween Heroes could be a fun little activity to use as part of lesson on recycling. The game’s context of Halloween might remind students when they’re out trick o’ treating to not litter.

A Customizable Halloween eBook

October 9, 2013 by admin

Screen Shot 2013-10-07 at 9.37.01 AM As I walked through the grocery store the other day I couldn’t help but be reminded by the mounds of candy corn that Halloween isn’t too far away. Halloween eBook by Visuals Work is a simple, customizable Halloween ebook for kids. The short story is about a friendly vampire, monster, and mummy preparing to go trick or treating. Students “find” each one of these as they read the story. To customize the story you can upload students’ pictures so that they appear next to the mummy in the story. Students can read the story on their own or they can tap the text to hear the story read aloud.

If you visit the Visuals Work website you can grab a PDF of the story. Of course, the PDF can’t be customized but if you don’t have iPads for every student you could use the PDF version of the story in place of the ebook.
