Civil War by KIDS DISCOVER – Great History iPad App

October 15, 2013 by admin

Screen Shot 2013-10-15 at 11.30.15 PMKIDS DISCOVER currently offers fourteen iPad apps for students. The latest KIDS DISCOVER app is about the U.S. Civil War. The content of the app is far superior to the Civil War section of any middle school or elementary school social studies textbooks that I’ve seen. In the app students can read text, listen to audio of things like the Gettysburg Address, and manipulate 3-D objects. The app also includes videos, cartoons, and plenty of historical imagery. Students can tap the images to learn more about the people and places pictured. After working through all of the chapters of the app students can test their knowledge with review quizzes and puzzles.

Civil War by KIDS DISCOVER is currently priced at $3.99.

A Customizable Halloween eBook

October 9, 2013 by admin

Screen Shot 2013-10-07 at 9.37.01 AM As I walked through the grocery store the other day I couldn’t help but be reminded by the mounds of candy corn that Halloween isn’t too far away. Halloween eBook by Visuals Work is a simple, customizable Halloween ebook for kids. The short story is about a friendly vampire, monster, and mummy preparing to go trick or treating. Students “find” each one of these as they read the story. To customize the story you can upload students’ pictures so that they appear next to the mummy in the story. Students can read the story on their own or they can tap the text to hear the story read aloud.

If you visit the Visuals Work website you can grab a PDF of the story. Of course, the PDF can’t be customized but if you don’t have iPads for every student you could use the PDF version of the story in place of the ebook.

MeeGenius Puts Great Children’s Stories on iPads

December 23, 2012 by admin

Screen Shot 2012-12-23 at 8.51.52 AMMeeGenius is an app that I’ve written about on my other blogs because in addition to being an iPad app it is also available as a Chrome app and as an Android app. MeeGenius offers a large collection of children’s stories that children can read to themselves or have read to them by the MeeGenius narrator. When the narration is activated (the default setting) each word in the story is highlighted as it is read aloud.

MeeGenius provides a nice way for students to experience some nice short stories and practice reading at the same time. The MeeGenius app is free but most of the books in the MeeGenius catalog are not free. MeeGenius is offering a free school and library subscription program but it’s not clear how many ebooks are included in that free subscription.
