The StoryCorps App Helps Students Format & Record Interviews

July 13, 2015 by admin

storycorpsStoryCorps.me is a free iOS and Android app designed to help people conduct and record great interviews. The app includes a set of questions that you can use in your interview. The question sets are varied depending upon the relationship that you do or don’t have with your interviewee. While recording your interview you can swipe through the questions to help you keep the interview on track. Completed recordings can saved on your device and or shared with the StoryCorps community.

StoryCorps.me will try to force you to create a StoryCorps account, but you can use it without creating an account. Creating an account will allow you to publish your recordings on the StoryCorps website.

StoryCorps.me is the app that I would want students to use when they are recording podcasts involving two or more people. Being able to see the questions while they record should help students keep their interviews concise and on track.

AudioCopy – A Simple App for Creating and Sharing Audio Recordings

August 5, 2014 by admin

Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 7.58.58 PM AudioCopy is a free iPad app that makes it easy to record and share audio files. To use AudioCopy simply open the app, tap the red record button, and start talking. You can use the app to trim the end and beginning of your recording and normalize sound fluctuations. Your finished recording can be published to SoundCloud or any of the 197 apps that are compatible with AudioCopy.

AudioCopy could be a great app for students to use to record short audio interviews or to create audio messages to use as blog posts. Teacher could use the app to record short audio notes to use as replacements for written substitute teacher lesson plans. I often use audio recordings to deliver substitute teacher plans so that my students would hear the plan for the day directly from me as I wanted them to hear it.

Audio Notebook – Record Audio While Typing Notes

February 10, 2014 by admin

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 9.29.04 AM Audio Notebook is a handy iPad app for people who want to combine audio recording with their typed notes. Audio Notebook is very easy to use. To create a new entry in Audio Notebook just open the app and tap the “+” symbol to create a new entry. To add audio to your notebook entry tap the record button. You can pause and restart your recordings as often as you like. To add text to your notebook entry just tap the screen to open your keyboard and write your notes. You can type notes while recording audio at the same time.

Audio Notebook includes color-coded labels that you can apply to your notes. Notes can be sorted by name or date by tapping the “i”  icon in your notebook’s home screen.

Audio Notebook could be a great iPad app for students to use during lectures. Having the audio recording to fall back on could be helpful when text notes fail to include a key detail. Audio Notebook is also a good iPad app for journalism students to use to record their interviews.

Audio Notebook is currently free (as of February 10, 2014). The regular price is $2.99.

Create and Share Audio Recordings With Audioboo for iOS

July 8, 2013 by admin

auidbooAudioboo is a free tool for creating audio messages to share on the web. Using Audioboo you can record messages on your mobile device using Audioboo’s free Android or iPhone apps. You can also record messages directly on the Audioboo website. Messages that you create can be shared by embedding your recording into a blog or website. You can also share messages by posting them to Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr.

The Audioboo iOS app isn’t optimized for iPad use, but it works just fine on my iPad 2 when I tap the “2x” button. Students could use Audioboo to craft short audio blog entries. You can use the app to record and post instructions for students to listen to when a substitute teacher is taking care of your students for the day.

Recordium – Add Visual Notes to Audio Recordings

May 31, 2013 by admin

recordium Recordium is a new iPad and iPhone for creating audio recordings. At first glance the app reminded me Sound Cloud. Like Sound Cloud, Recordium can be used to quickly create a spoken note or to record someone playing an instrument. Recordium can be used to trim the end or beginning of a recording. You can also snip out a middle portion of a recording and save it as a separate recording or trash it. Where Recordium gets interesting is in the annotation features. The app allows you to highlight and tag portions of your recordings. Your tags can even include pictures. Completed recordings can be shared to a number of services including Google Drive and Evernote.

The Recordium highlighting and tagging tools could be very useful in adding context and meaning to a recording. For example, if I a student was recording a part of a lecture he or she could go back and add a diagram of what the lecturer was talking about. Or if you’re using the service to record reminders for yourself, you can use the note feature to write down when you’ve accomplished the things in your audio reminder. Learn more about Recordium in the video below.
