March 19, 2014 by admin

Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 2.18.56 PMVocabulary.com is an excellent vocabulary study service offering thousands of vocabulary practice lists and activities for students in elementary school through graduate school. This week Vocabulary.com launched a new iPad app ($2.99).

Through the app students can access hundreds of lists of SAT, GRE, and other test prep words. Students can also use the app to can find vocabulary lists that are attached to novels, historical documents, famous speeches, and current news articles.

When you sign up for Vocabulary.com you will be given an assessment quiz in order to give you suggested lists with which to start your practice. After completing the assessment you can use the practice lists suggested by Vocabulary.com or choose your own lists from the huge gallery of vocabulary lists.

One of the aspects of the Vocabulary.com activities that I like is the instant feedback for every practice question a student attempts.  Vocabulary.com has an optional competition aspect to it. Students can play for their schools and climb the Vocabulary.com leaderboard.

Audio Notebook could be a great iPad app for students to use during lectures. Having the audio recording to fall back on could be helpful when text notes fail to include a key detail. Audio Notebook is also a good iPad app for journalism students to use to record their interviews.

Audio Notebook is currently free (as of February 10, 2014). The regular price is $2.99.

Quick Key Turns Your iPhone Into a Scanner

November 26, 2013 by admin

Screen Shot 2013-11-26 at 3.39.09 PM Quick Key is a new and free iOS app that turns your iPhone into a bubble sheet scanner. My former colleague, Mike Morrell, was raving about it on Facebook a while back so I had to check it out.

Quick Key has two parts to it that when combined make it very easy for you to quickly grade multiple choice and true/false quizzes. Here’s the basics of how it works; create your quiz on the Quick Key website then print and distribute a bubble sheet. After your students have completed the bubble sheet you simply scan the sheets with your iPhone (it works on iPads too, but the resolution is grainy) and the grading is done for you. From the app you can send grades to the classes that you have created on the Quick Key website. If you enter students’ email addresses in your class rosters on Quick Key, you can have grades emailed to students.

In the quiz mode students see an animation then have to select the matching phrase. Translations of the meanings are available in Spanish, German, Italian, Russian and French.
